4-1/2 cups flour
1 egg, beaten with 2 tsp water
Coarse salt
1 package yeast
1/4 cup sugar
4-1/2 cups flour

- Stir together water, yeast, and sugar in a large bowl. Let stand 10 minutes. Mix in flour. Turn dough onto lightly floured surface and knead for 10 minutes.
- After kneading, place dough in greased container. Cover and let rise until double.
- Punch down and divide dough into 24 balls. Roll each ball into a rope 15 inches long and shape into a pretzel. Place pretzels on greased cookie sheet, 2 inches apart. Brush pretzels with egg wash mixture. Sprinkle with coarse salt. Cover and let rise again for 1/2 hour.
- Bake at 475°F for 10 to 12 minutes. Cool on rack.
